Well I suffered a serious bump on the noggin today and it was due to trying to do a task too quickly. Rush rush rush, I was in the backyard attempting to set a post for a special whirligig that I made for my soon to be 4 year old son. I stood up too quickly and bonked my head on his very low basketball rim. A few hours and a few staples later I seem to be doing fine but the whirligig never got installed. Maybe in a couple of days I will get back out there. Anyway, here it is for you all to enjoy. You probably guessed by now that he loves trains.

We are very excited for the new year at hutch. It is certain to be full of creative ideas and activity. Workshops, classes, and demonstrations, designed to capture the imagination and interest in people of all ages. Expect to see classes in making all sorts of fun things and the processes will vary from baking to sewing to paper sculpting. And don't worry the whirligig creating will be a constant workshop in the new year. Here is the initial schedule for hutch classes in January and February 2012. Paper House Light Workshop

Do you have any old books, magazines or photos that are taking up space somewhere and you never get the chance to appreciate them. Why not sign up for a hutch workshop and turn them into a magical light that you can adore every day and night. These hanging house lights are aprox. 7 inches tall and 9 inches wide consisting of 12 paper houses. It is a 3 hour workshop and the lighting kit is supplied for you. All you need to bring is fun old book or magazine pages that are at least 9 inches wide and 7 inches high to fit our die cutter. *Thin paper is best for it's translucency. The age level is 16 and above.

"Make your tree this season be a whirligig"

Sign up now for the December whirligig workshop at Hutch! Pictured above are a few gigs that were made by participants in a recent workshop. Wouldn't you like to create your very own whimsical wind spinner for your yard. Don't let your new year be whirligigless. I know that December is a particularly busy month for most but making a gig on a Saturday can be a great stress reliever. It could also be a great gift for a special someone. The workshop is a hands on all day fun fest and all the structural and mechanical parts are supplied for you. All you need to bring is the fun stuff to attach to the structure and catch the wind. A distictive" Topper" object is also required. Give me a call as soon as possible if you would like to sign on up.

"Holiday Repurposed Paper House Ornaments and Garland Making at Hutch"

Participants bring their old book pages, magazines or photos to cut and assemble, creating little magical house tree ornaments and string garlands. *Book pages, magazines and photos need to be at least 9 inches in width and 7 inches high to fit our die cutter.

This can be a family affair or sign up with a good friend and spend a couple of fun hours making special decorations for your home or a gift perhaps. These are not difficult to make but I would put an age level of 12 or so on this one.

Well, I'm not crazy about pushing Christmas on people before the Thanksgiving turkey is cold but I just wanted to get the word out that over the next 2 days at hutch (November 25th &26th) the first 5 in store customers that spend over $25. will get a repurposed cardboard table top tree as a bonus. This doesn't apply to our on line store customers. I have them in natural, cream, green and aqua. They have lots of little shelves and nooks to display your favorite holiday smalls. See you tomorrow. "Mrs. Picklefish"

Sometimes coming up with a title for something is really challenging and other times it is super easy. I've been working on the whirligig at hutch for a while now, using it as a demo gig during workshops. One day a woman mentioned that a fish mold that I had painted dark green looked like a pickle and she was right about that. A while later, when I was playing around with putting a coffee pot on the top, I inverted it to see how it would visually work. I saw it as a head straight off and "Mrs. Picklefish" was born. She is a single rotating gig that measures 26" tall from the base and 14" wide and deep. It will be for sale in our etsy shop as soon I figure out what the shipping costs will be. I guarantee that this gig will spin like crazy. In the meantime, check out some of the fun vintage finds that Kristin just found for the shop!

When it rains, slugs come out to play...

While it's true, there are a TON of slugs in the NW, they aren't all slimy & gross. Really... they aren't. There is a particular variety that comes from the attic of your favorite grandma & hutch studio. They are sweet, cozy, & extremely lovable. These three slugs have been made from vintage chenille bedspreads & sauntered out to play today.

I made my very first slug for our son, Sayer when he was about 6months. It became his favorite lovey & is very well traveled & loved. Since then, I've been making them for KLTworks. I just made these this weekend exclusively for hutch studio. It seemed fitting as the weather is quite rainy & blustery. They are currently in the hutch studio etsy shop.

"Hutch Saturday Event"

~ HUTCH EVENT ~

This Saturday, November 5th is the middle of the annual Art's Alive weekend in La Conner. That just so happens to be the weekend we reopened our shop as Hutch 2 years ago. To celebrate our Hutch anniversary we will be having art demonstrations throughout the day. From noon to 2 pm I will be demonstrating the process of how our whirligigs are made and from 2 pm to 4 pm the creative Kristin will be demonstrating her magical technique of making continuous line drawings in thread using a sewing machine. Whether you are a quilter, artist, or candlestick maker, you will find this to be an amazing thing to watch. If you've visited Hutch in the past it will be great to see you again and you know where to go if not just look for the whirligig fence and the balloons on the right right as you enter the town of La Conner.

~ Whirligig Creations at Hutch ~

I know that I always say that the last workshop was the greatest to date and the truth is they are all fantastic . The whirligigs pictured above were made in the July workshop. I'm always excited about the "stuff" that everyone brings to create their personal wind statement. Often the funner the item the bigger the challenge but the challenge is fun and thrilling when we make it work. These folks were into it big time. Two of them had already planned and prepped many of the components that went on their gigs. LOVE IT!!!

I also love getting emails from workshoppers after the class is over with questions about new gigs they are now working on. To think that hutch may be spreading the joy of whirligigs throughout the land puts a big smile on my mug. If any of my former workshoppers would send me a picture of themselves standing by there whirligig wherever it ended up being installed I would love to create a blog page called "As The Gig Spins".

The next whirligig workshop is scheduled for Saturday, September 24th. The October workshop date will be posted soon.

Paper Bride Part 1

I have to say the part of this project that was the most fun for me was creating the water like paper train with pop up fishing boat. I wasn't at all sure if I could manipulate the heavy paper of the charts to make convincing waves.

Wave by wave I began scrunching and folding the chart being very careful not to capsize the boat.

I have to say I had to do a wee bit of reinforcing to keep the boat afloat. Very thin strips of card stock are glued to the back for support and rigid strength.

The paper train flows behind the bride like ocean waves. I hope she catches one.

A little while ago a few of us hutch minds were discussing ideas about story telling and in particular the story of our company's original inspiration "Elsa". She was the grandmother of our company founders Krys and Suzanne and a seamstress of dresses, gowns, and just about anything she could think up. I wanted to come up with a very special object that married her family connection to "fishing" with her passion for creating beautiful dressess. Pictured here is the bride that I constructed out of many old nautical charts. Being a fan of the competitive design show "Project Runway" I couldn't help but pretend I was in one of there crazy "think outside of the box" challenges. I took many photos of this project and I'm sure there will be many posts to follow. If you notice the cut out fishing boat casting it's net in the train of the dress, I like to think she is trying to catch a good one.

"Maintaining the old gigs at Hutch"

There are a few whirligigs (five I think) that have been on our front fence at Hutch for over 20 years. Even though they were very well crafted they are still subjected to the elements all year round and in our climate that means a great deal of rain and wind. They are mostly made of light metals that even though they are partially painted will rust. Screws will loosen and parts will fall off. Fortunately these are easy fixes. As I watch them spin in the wind I notice if one is not keeping up I bring it in to the shop and examine it more closely. This one pictured here is an old timer I call the "Everything Gig" and was moving slowly, so I brought it inside for a check up. It was missing a couple of small windcatchers that I easily replaced with new ones but the problem was not as simple as that. It was internal. I took the hub apart, cleaned the bearings and repacked it with a generous amount of grease but it still wasn't moving smoothly. There comes a point when the metal that the ball bearings are in contact with gets rough and pitted and at that point there isn't much you can do. It will still move, but will need a stronger wind. The older I get the more I can relate. One old whirligig to another.

Lovin Spoon Pulls

What can you do with all that old flatware that collects in your kitchen drawers? Make door pulls that's what. I'm certain this isn't an original idea and I'm not sure where I saw it for the first time but it sure is clever and fun. It can really turn the spoon into a more decorative item and add something special to a cool cabinet door or hutch.

These "Betty Lou" spoons are very fun. There was no question they had to be on the hutch in our little girl's room at the shop.

This was the very first spoon handle that I made. It was probably about a year ago when I refurbished this glass display cabinet.

We have the very latest and greatest selection of kltworks organic cotton Tees at Hutch right now. So many colors and styles and sizes that you are sure to find the perfect cozy creature to wear. Above is a selection of the unisex tees in many different colors. The newest image in print right now and perfect for Hutch is the rabbit and my current personal favorite.

The new grey owl cardigan would be so cozy and stylish for the fall or even right now if you live here in western Washington. Seriously, it's late July and I'm still in thermal underwear. Come on summer! Well we can use our imaginations and pretend we have fur or feathery coats like the birds and animals on Kristin's super soft tees.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the Kristin's design process I have to fill you in. She sews each image freehand using a sewing machine. One continuous unbroken line of thread that grows into an owl, or a squirrel, or a rabbit. It's an amazing technique that captures the line quality of a blind contour drawing or the feel of an Alexander Calder "circus" sketch. Pictured above are examples of the women's tees.

Hanging Jars

~ Hanging Jars & Spoon Hangers ~

A fun DIY project this summer at Hutch was to put our glass source jars to good reuse and hang them from old spoons that were formed into hooks and screwed into the interior wall of our front porch. They really stand out as you enter our shop. I've been asked on many occasion about the species of flower. They are an annual called Callie Orange or (Calibrachoa). The color really looks great against the grey green of our exterior house color.

These jars can be used inside or outside. If outside, a covered area like our porch is ideal, because rain will accumulate in the jars (no drainage) and your plants will drown and rot. I like to store my paint brushes in them inside the studio. I can see them being cool candle holders as well. The possibilities are endless.

We sell the whole set up (jar + spoon hanger) for $15. in our shop. I think it is one of those ideas that customers see and think that they will go home and do themselves, but I think you have to think about the time, effort, and tools required to make these. $15. is a sweet deal.

Colander Light

Sometimes you can have an idea, create it, and later on see a similar idea made by someone else. I've learned over the years that it is always better to then take your idea further. It's a way of creatively pushing yourself. Recently I picked up a magazine and discovered an article on lights made using kitchen colanders. I had made a couple for the shop a year or so ago that seemed very similar. HTe very next day I took down the one I had in our kitchen and began turning up the creative dial. I added fork fringe which I had been thinking about doing but this article sealed the deal. I also suspended it with a cool old twisted metal plant hanger from a bent spoon bracket on the ceiling. The change was much needed. Before it was hardly noticed and now it can't be ignored.

One of the things I like about the forks is that the light takes on almost organic jellyfish quality. If jellyfish were made out of kitchen wares that is. I also staggered the fork lengths to create a wavelike edge at the bottom.

In terms of function things were much improved as well. Before it was so high up on our tall ceiling that it offered little light to a dark space. Now it is centered right above the table and illuminates the center piece beautifully. This light is priced at $300. Give me a call to order 360-466-2303.

There has definitely been a lot of changes at Hutch lately and one of the very best is the emphasis that we are putting on idea of "Play". The magical quality that a child's eye and imagination possess has always been at the core of what we have tried to express with what me make and how we present those things. I think that this shows better now that it ever has before and especially in the rooms of Hutch. Below is a shadow that is cast on the window sill in our play porch from the childlike drawings of bunnies on our window glass. I realize it is a small thing that might easily go unnoticed but I always find magic in these little moments of discovery.

Krys, who is like Hutch's professional picker has been very busy combing our area thrift and vintage shops and finding some great treasures. The porch is full of vintage games that fill the older customers with nostalgic memories of "play" and still effect children with the playtime feeling. So much so that on one occasion a little girl was playing quietly while her mother browsed the entire shop for a good long time and when they had both finally left I discovered that every little bunny in every room had been magically moved into one of the dollhouses on the porch and they were having a fun old time. Very cute.

One of the very fun things we have done lately is put a hopscotch game on the floor in our side porch. By using tape it isn't a permanent addition to the floor and hopefully will easily remove in the future when we think of some other fun thing.

And it's not just for decoration either. It gets used frequently by young and old. Sometimes I think the older ones, look at the floor and hop along in their minds remembering their own childhood experience.

To end this post I want to share something I discovered one day written on our little child's easel located on the play porch. It made me smile. The little girl that wrote it returned a week later to happily discover it was still there and hadn't been erased.

There will definitely be more playful posts to come.

Paper Boat Finale!

~ Paper Boat Finale ~

Once upon a time I made a boat out of recycled cardboard and scrap fabric. Here is how the project concluded......

To tell a little story I painted words on both sides of the boat - "Once upon a bay a boy sailed away on a toy. As the boat sailed away the boy would sing and play."

I then continued the story telling by cutting out words within the paper waves that popped up from the table.

After it was finished all that was left is to decide what to display on this display. We made a bunch of very soft and sweet sailor bunnies that sit inside the boat as well as sail along side in their very own paper boats made from nautical charts.

I almost forgot to mention the "sail". I coffee dyed some very sheer cotton fabric and stitched it to narrow strips of cardboard leaving the edges very rough. After tearing a few holes I patched them with pieces of scrap fabric and stamped anchors and boat wheels on them. To attach the sail I used the wires that suspend the boat over the table. I'm not sure if these pictures do the reality justice so if you want to experience this elaborate tabletop display in person you will just have to pay us a visit at Hutch soon.

Boat Project Continued

If you have been following the progress of the boat project at hutch, we last left off waiting for a sail for the little old wooden boat I repainted. Well when the sail arrived, attached to the boat and placed in the room it was enormous. Almost reaching the ceiling and blocking a great deal of light into the room it just wasn't going to work in the space. A second plan of a wooden rocker crib shaped like a boat didn't work either. What do I turn to in an emergency......CARDBOARD! I began to pull out any big old boxes I could find, fired up the trusty glue gun and began to cut.

I have to say I never built a boat before. As a child I was more of a car guy, but being from Rhode Island "The Ocean State" where there are more boats than cars, and helping my grandfather every 4 years refinish the boat that never left his yard gave me an advantage visualizing this task. Here is the bottom with ribs attached.

Next I began to cut strips and attaching them to the sides. This is when the boat really started to take shape.

Adding small details at the bow and stern was a little bit of a nod to movie director Tim Burton who always has had a thing for the spiral. Also the boat would be zigging and zagging without a sturdy rudder.

Slapping a fresh coat of paint on the cardboard brought the vessel to life. Trimming in aqua and red and of course drenching it in a bath of coffee completed the basic boat. What's left you ask? I think I'll add some words to the aqua trim, float it over a paper sea, and make tattered sails to catch the hutch winds.

If you happened to stop by hutch today "Friday" and noticed that we were hanging the closed sign I apologize. We are presently turning the shop upside down and backwards and there is a lot of stuff lying about in every room. Our plan is to have things straightened up enough to open our door again this coming Wednesday. If you've been in our shop more than once you are aware how much things change and I appreciate your support and interest.

The Painted Boat

Well it's been smooth sailing so far with the boat project. The application of new color has been completed with great care as not to make the vessel to look new. Actually my goal was to make it look older than it did before. It really looks good against the aqua room seen behind in this picture.

This is the area that will be occupied by a fantastic sail. I can't wait for it!

To support the boat I had to make a couple of simple wooden stands for the stern and bow.

The ships wheel is repaired and spinning again, ready for it's next voyage.

"From junk to junk"

One of the latest projects at hutch studio is a large wooden boat for the center room. Pictured above is a collage of the rough idea. The biggest difference is ours will be much more fun in appearance.

As luck would have it we just so happened to have this old wooden boat buried in our shed. We pulled it out and popped it on a table at the back of the studio. Some of the color will work but a few cosmetic changes are in order.

The old chipping white paint on the hull is great but we need a bit of red. The periwinkle blue trim was changed out for an aqua blue.

The ships wheel needed some repairs. I'm happy to say it turns again.

The deck and cabin roof were painted a wood tone. It will be a bit warmer than the periwinkle and green of before.

So watch for the next stage of the boat project... It's definitely a fun one.

I just can't help being all mellow yellow right now. Here in the Skagit Valley the daffodils are in full bloom and I drive right through fields of them on my way to hutch every day. Soon they will be upstaged by tulips but I personally have a fondness for the daffodils. I thought I would pull out some of the vintage "yellow" objects at the studio and share them with you. Enjoy the sunshine!

Spring Schedule

~ Spring Schedule at Hutch ~

There are a couple of small changes to the schedule of business that I would like everyone to know about. If you happen to stop by on a Monday thinking that we would be open you might be disappointed like my son was when he stopped by on a whim to visit his daddy today and I was out to a lunch meeting which is very out of the ordinary. For Spring we will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and open Wednesday through Sunday from 11am- 4:30pm. This means we are open for an extra day during the week and open a little bit later.

But even if we aren't open when you pop by you can still..........

take lot of pictures of the fence, whirligigs, and yard...

... or take a walk through the nearby fields of daffodils and tulips.

It can still be a good day.

*I would like to give photography credit to my wife Kristin for taking these great shots of Sayer today. I don't know how she does it. Also the green organic squirrel T-shirt that he is wearing is available at the shop and in her shop. Everyone needs a squirrel Tee in the springtime.

It's spring here in the Skagit Valley and we're singing in the rain. At times the lack of sunshine can give us a good case of the blues. Today at the studio I thought I would pull out all of the fun blue things that will hopefully bring a smile and ray of sunshine into your day. Enjoy!

This vintage toy record player could have just as easily made the "red" category but the side wall with the story book decals is what I focused on. Maybe just maybe these photos of our fun old toys made you want to play the happy blues. I imagine that's what this record player would do.

Oh how they liked to use red on everything back in the day. There was something to it I think. Among all other colors red always stands out. Like it's saying "Look at me I'm red!". In art there has been the saying "If you can't make it good make it big, and if you can't make it big make it red." That isn't to say red items are in some way making up for some shortfall with their surface color. It's just a funny way to point out the power of "RED". Here a a few of the beautifully red objects of hutch studio.

~ DIY Tulip Tea light ~

I'm always thinking of different ways to use these little battery operated tea lights around the shop. They just make the perfect little warm touch here and there. Since the Skagit Valley will soon be blooming with vast fields of tulips I thought a little tulip light would be well suited to our studio. Best of all it's a repurposing project that utilize all those old magazines that collect all over the house.

Step #1- Collect magazine pages that have a certain color (your choice). I'm making pink tulips. Also tear out a little bit of "green".

Here is all that you need to make your tulip light. Step #2- With scissors cut the pink petal shapes approximately 2 x 3 inches. You can do a straight cut along the base of the petals now or after they are taped together (your choice). I also cut 2 or three thin leaf shapes approximately 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch.

Step #3- Using a pencil or dowel curl the petal pieces starting at the top of the petal.

Step #4- Place the petal pieces in a row 5 inches in length overlapping them slightly. Place the green leaf pieces on top. I hold them in place with a pencil. I first made my strip 5 1/4" long but learned that it only needed to be 5".

Step #5- Using satin finish invisible tape, secure all petal and leaf pieces together along the bottom edge. If you didn't pre-trim the bottom edge previously do it after this step. Step #6- Leave a slight overhang of tape at each end and wrap around the side walls of the tea light.

Turn on the light and happy spring!

Vintage Inspiration "Green"

There were some really great green items hidden in the nooks and crannies here at hutch. How about this black and green electric range? This was for the really serious little cook. I would imagine it could brew a fine kettle of tea or bake a mini lasagna. I'm not going to plug it in though.

Red always seems to be the perfect accent to green. Here are a few cool finds with that pop of red. The Betsy Ross electric sewing machine in the upper right corner is a "serious" toy like the Empire stove.

This last bit of green is a "Dump Trac" pull cart. I would of loved to fill this with all sorts of things when I was knee high to a green grasshopper.

Another Whirl

"Another Whirl"

A little less than a year ago I constructed this whirligig using a few old metal toys. I suspended the toys below using bicycle spokes that I collect when removing hubs from rims. After putting it outside on our fence and watching the upper course of cans struggle to rotate in a good wind I realized that there was just too much weight on the perimeter. I brought the whirligig into the studio a little while ago and I've been slowly redesigning it. I just finished and put it out to spin this morning.

The new design is horizontal which fits the space under our sign better and I moved the lower toys to a separate hub and rim making it a double rotating gig. I also spruced it up with a bit of paint. I can't wait for the next really breezy day to see it fly like the wind. It is for sale. Give me a ring #360-466-2303

Bunny Shed Finish

The "Bunny Shed" is finished. Today I wrapped up the painting on this fancy cardboard box and installed a small spot light inside. My plan is to have a scene of some kind that you can peak a view of through the round side window.

I temporarily placed the Bunny artwork that I was using as reference inside the shed to give the general effect. Alright! Now on to painting the cardboard dollhouse!

Cardboard Creations

Well the floor has been piling up with cardboard scraps over the past couple of days. I'm working on a couple different projects right now. One is a shed that will be in a bunnies by the bay window display and the other is a large dollhouse that will be in our own sweet room here at the studio. Both are pictured below during the construction phase.

The shed has a bunny weathervane on top which gave me the idea to make a front fence with hutch whirligigs for the dollhouse.

The construction of both is complete. Today I primed the paper so that I can begin the surface painting. I will continue to chronicle this project with more pictures. I will leave you with a view of the spacious interior and a full view of the dollhouse.

DIY Paper Cut Project

"Oval Flower Window Frame"

At the studio we have a long side porch lined with windows. I knew that these windows would be a great place for an eye catching visual element that could grab the attention of passers-by. I began making tiny birds in wire cages that I could hang in every window. To draw more attention to them I decided to frame them in a oval paper cut. It was spring so flowers popped into my head immediately.

Well they did attract customers in to the shop but The birds were hardly noticed. Everyone wanted to know if the paper cut outs were for sale. I am happy to announce that a pattern and instructions for the "Make It Yourself" paper cut project.

April Demos may bring smiles.

It will be raining "process" in the month of April at hutch studio. We are planning some creative and magical demonstrations during the month that will definitely be something not to miss. I (Chris Theiss) will be giving a demo on how to throw clay forms on the potters wheel. Exactly "what" I will make is yet undecided, but I'll give you a little hint. Have you ever seen a rabbit pulled out of a hat? Whatever it is it will be fun to watch and no I won't be playing the "Unchained Melody" song from "Ghost" during the demo.

"Thread Drawing"

One of the many benefits to being married to creative "genius" that is Kristin Loffer Theiss is the fact that she is willing from time to time to come by the studio and demonstrate her artistic skills on a sewing machine. In a very intense exercise of visual concentration she moves a "blank" piece of canvas back and forth under the needle of a chugging sewing machine building an image with a continuous unbroken line of stitches. AMAZING RIGHT? Amazing to watch for sure.

So plan a trip to La Conner during the month of April and remember that's "TULIP TIME" in the Skagit Valley so there is plenty to see and do. The following is a video of the last demonstration that Kristin did for hutch studio. Please don't be confused by the date on the video.

Dollhouses

~ Dollhouses ~

Vintage dollhouses have appeared all around the shop lately. They are very old and full of character (broken boards and chipped paint). They certainly amp up the rustic quality of our studio space but they also add to the idea of "play" and childhood that we really try to capture in all the things we make and display. This red beauty is the centerpiece in our middle room and the facade is hinged to expose the interior rooms.

In the same room, directly under the table, sits this single story house with attached garage. I believe it used to have fencing in the yard. I have a strong personal connection to the "dollhouse". As a child I remember that my sister had a simple wooden dollhouse and for some reason I thought the roof was too plane. I took it upon myself to hand cut little shingles and apply them to the roof. It's no surprise I ended up the way I am. Coincidentally in my artwork I address the idea of "house" and "home" and often work in a miniature scale. These are things that just happen sometimes without much if any intention, but are none the less very interesting to discover.

A couple of years ago I was visiting a blog called the The Junior Society where I would often find new and interesting things that got me jazzed. Then I saw it. A story about a young artist from Saskatchewan by the name of Heather Benning who transformed an old abandoned farmhouse on the plains of Manitoba into a life size dollhouse. She removed the exterior walls on the backside of the house and restored and staged the rooms just as she imagined they may have appeared in the 1950's and 60's when the house was being lived in. Some things just get to me and this was one of those things. For Heather the impetus for this amazing project was a childhood memory of playing house in an old structure similar to the one she used in her artwork. I'm always thankful for artists like Heather that manage to blow my mind with their ideas and ambition.

The last dollhouse in the studio is the first one you see when you enter. A crusty white patina on the exterior sets off the rich red roof. The facade completely removes exposing many small rooms. I forgot to mention that this house and the first one are wired for low voltage lighting. How cool is that? I think I need to make a video called "put a light in it".

DIY Whirligig Plans

"DIY Whirligig"

For those of you that haven't yet had the opportunity to visit hutch studio in La Conner, you may not know that the fence lining our front yard is constructed out of found objects (washboards, croquet balls, rakes, rocking horses, etc...). The posts of this extraordinary fence are topped by "whirligigs", which are whimsical handmade objects that spin and move in the wind. Hutch studio whirligigs are all made by repurposing old "stuff" that collects in our garages, basements, and sheds. These objects exemplify the creative spirit of hutch studio and I'm pretty sure the #1 most photographed thing in town. They are just so fun to watch spin on breezy day and it's almost like they charge the sidewalk with a creative electricity. Most of these gigs are for sale (there's a catalog with prices inside the shop). We also offer monthly workshops on how to build whirligigs. I am so crazy excited to finally be offering the plans and instructions on how to make your very own whirligig just like the ones here at hutch studio.

For those of you that haven't visited hutch studio for the past few months I wanted to show you the new whirligigs that are spinning outside on the fence and inside as well. The first is titled "Cookin With Steam" and it's a (double spinner), meaning it has two levels of wind catchers that rotate in opposite directions simultaneously. Oh it's as cool as it sounds. It's also made from a vintage toy washing machine and is topped with an antique steam iron. $325. In store pick up only.

"Sail Star" isn't super new but it has been recently refurbished. Paint was applied to the jumping fish molds and the boat masts were reinforced. This one FLYS when the wind is blowing. $250. In store pick up only.

This one is the most recent gig. "Starbird" is her name and she is a double spinner topped by a super cool aluminum deco styled tea kettle (with a bluebird spout). I've been waiting to use this pot for a while. I just put this one out on the fence last week and it quickly became the best mover to date. $200. In store pick up only. Color Inspiration

I've never considered myself to be particularly good when it comes to using color. I've painted the walls in my own house numerous times because my opinion on the colors always seem to change. My wife and I recently bought a new orange sofa to replace a bright blue one that we've lived with for ten years by covering it up with a neutral slip cover. The colors of hutch studio seem to be the one's that I'm drawn to over and over again. They seem to transport my mind back in time and take me away to a space of memories. A calm feeling in contrast to the bustle of the outside world. My focus in this post is going to be (tan/yellow/gold), red, and black. This color combination when applied to objects of age seems to always appeal to me. The red and golden hues are very warm and the black gives it that graphic "coolness".

I just looked around the studio for things that had these common factors. Some are objects that inspire me, some are props, and some are tools. You can discover all of the following items here and there at the studio if you look hard enough.

Isn't this Buster Brown shoe box lid great? In this instance the darker red provides the contrast in the graphics. I love the simple line drawings of the children playing. And yes the original shoes are still within.

There something about old rulers and hand tools. The wood is warmer because it has been well used and touched. Add the old worn paint and it's a winning combo in my color book. What color combinations get you excited?

Illustrated Drum Shades

One day I was organizing one of the rooms at the studio used to store just about everything and sitting on top of a precarious pile of old lamps were a few newer looking drum shades. I'm assuming someone had bought them with a plan, but had abandoned the project. Inspired by a children's book that my wife and son had recently given to me as a gift I decided to use the simple white surface of the shade as if it were a wrapped piece of paper to draw on. I first did a very light pencil sketch followed by line drawing with a fine point black sharpie marker. Subtle color was added with watercolors.

Because some of the themes at the studio incorporate children, nature, and animals, that's what I used as subject matter. The first lampshade pictured a little boy and a bird, a little girl and a squirrel, and trees with an acorn.

It really made a sweet light for a nursery or small child's room.

Well, someone else thought the same thing and bought it. The room got dark after that so I had to come up with another one quick. It was early spring and the mole hills were treacherous in the back yard so I thought Moles and Daffodils would be a great combo. Oh yeah, and a little girl and boy too.

I love a challenge, and to make a mole cute is exactly that. Can you picture this little dude doing a little "Caddyshack" dance? This lamp is still the center piece in our "sweet room" at the studio. It retails for $150. call 360-466-2303 or stop into the studio to see it in person.

I'm thinking the next one is going to have "pink tulips", bunnies, a little girl, and a little boy. What do you think? Should the little girl have curly red hair?

I also want to share a secret with you. The magical ingredient that I add to so many things that I make in the studio is............

COFFEE!!!

I put it in myself as well.

It adds the right warmth to white and tones down colors that are a little too bright. Give it a swirl! No cream or sugar.

~Paper Lantern House~

Here's a fun and really simple idea. Take a photograph of your house and print it horizontally on a standard 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of 20# weight paper. Cut a straight edge along the bottom of the image and at the top cut along the house's roof line. loosely wrap the house around a soup can slightly overlapping at the back. Using a couple of pieces of satin transparent tape secure. Now in order to make this a safe lantern you need to use a battery operated tea light. You can find these little 1 1/2" lights pretty easily in craft stores (especially around the holidays). NEVER USE A CANDLE! Paper + flame = fire. Simply place the paper house cylinder over the tea light and your house is glowing with warmth.

This picture was taken in the dark, but in a dimly lit space with a fresh battery in the light the house gives of a nice soft glow. I sell these "hutch studio" lights at the shop but it's just one of those free ideas that people leave the studio with. To make a "move" easier on a child a warm light of the house that they grew up in could be a great comfort. A few weeks ago, my wife who spends a great deal of time in the blogosphere came across a video from a new television show called "Portlandia". It was titled "Put A Bird On It", and featured Fred Armisen from SNL, playing one of a pair hired to tweak a design boutique. Their solution to all sad and ordinary things was to put a bird on it and it would be magically transformed into something desirable. I know the reason that this is sooooo funny to me is that I know how true it is and I certainly use the "bird" at the studio quite a bit. Pictured above is an early version of a "Sweet Tweet" which I started to make last spring to hang in the many windows of our side porch. The red and blue seemed to be the most popular but I made them in just about every color for a while.

Every time I made a few more of these popular little guys I would change the design slightly. The most recent (pictured above) has a base made from repurposed cardboard and the bird is made from painted fimo clay rather than glazed porcelain. I personally prefer the matt surface on the bird, but what do you think? I'm not sure if I will be making more of these birds but that's what I always say. Escape from New York

Krys and our amazing gift show team finally got out of New York City. The snow delayed them a bit, but alas they are all home safe and sound. I wanted to share more of the special goodies that have returned with them. Pictured above is a plush giraffe named "Teeny". He measures approx. 8 inches tall and was one of the items representing hutch studio at the International Gift Fair. This lovely doll was also on view at the show, but sadly she is not quite ready to be sold in the shop. Maybe a couple of little tweaks are in order. Hopefully we'll see her again soon. I would be interested in your thoughts about her.

This "Teeny" giraffe is a little plumper due to her knit fabric. She is very soft and squishy. I think her white polka dots give her a "walking in the snow" look. She is approximately 8 inches tall and retails for $21. Call 360-466-2303 to order.

Chili Cook Off Report

It was a Chili night on Samish Island and the Fire engine was parked in front of the local Community Center with all lights flashing. Good luck finding anywhere to park. There were cars and trucks everywhere. For this "first time" event the turnout was amazing. Everyone seemed to be having a great time and all the cooks seemed to take it in stride when both the "Firefighter's Trophy" and the "Diner's Choice" Trophy were swept by a very proud couple. The trophies themselves were very hot looking thanks to the Tom Theisen who made them by hand. I would like to send out a special thanks to Ann Reid who gave a speech and directed everyone's attention to hutch studio which seemed to cast it's creative spell over the event with Whirligigs spinning at the center of every table.

This was just such a fun time and I'm definitely looking forward to going again next year. I'll just arrive earlier to make sure there is still plenty of Chili. After expenses the event brought in $1300. to support the Community Center and the local Fire Department. Nice work everyone!

The Windows of Hutch

~ The Windows of Hutch ~

I have to say that of all the things that I make at the studio the window coverings are my favorites. There seems to be so many levels on which to appreciate them. You are drawn to them from outside the house and that experience changes from day to night. from inside the experience is different but the light from day to day and day to night always effects how the look. The shadows that are created by the daylight passing through the cut designs are always exciting to see. The above detail is from the spring and summer window covering I call "Rainflowers" . It is a paper cut using thin white butcher paper. I like the way the paper curls at the edges and gives the design some dimensionality. The cascading flower and leaf pattern has a second element of dangling paper raindrops painted grey blue that fall from a cloud valance along the very top edge. This rain can be seen silhouetted in the photo below.

"Rainflowers"

The "Rainflowers" window covering is available as a paper cut kit. The full design measures 34 inches wide by 67 inches high and can be adjusted to fit most window openings. The cost is $28. and will be in our blog shop soon.

"Winter Window"

Our "Winter Window" is my favorite. The design is a northwest woodland winter scene comprised of trees, snow, mushrooms, a bird, and a squirrel. It is cut out of quilter's batting which has a translucent quality that allows for beautiful lighting effects when double layered. Pictured above is single cut out layer that has great shadow casting qualities. This fall I changed them slightly by dyeing the cut out layer dark brown, giving the design greater contrast without the help of backlighting.

In our "sweet room" which has a lot of light aqua and soft pink colors I dyed the solid piece of batting a very soft pink and left the cut out layer the natural cream color. I also flipped the image to create a balanced overall design for the double but separated windows in this nook.

I often tell customers about the first time I went outside the studio after dark, with the lights on inside. It looked magical and felt that way too. It was that tingling sensation throughout the whole body that you only experience on rare occasions. It's like when you hear a singer hit that amazing note or see a dance performance that leaves you breathless. Anyway, it was cool. This is a photo from last season before I dyed the cut outs brown. It's even better now. In the fall and winter I set the upper room lights on timers so everyone walking or driving by after dark can experience this magic for themselves. Like everything at the studio the window coverings are totally made by hand. The idea begins as a free hand line drawing that gets hand cut into a template. The template is then placed onto fabric, the design is traced, and then the fabric cutting is done. These windows are well worth the labor involved in making them, but don't take my word for it, come on by and see them for yourself.

Pictured here is an example of a completed double layer winter window with a dark brown cut out top layer that was hand dyed. This exact design measures 33 inches wide by 67 inches high and can be cropped to suit most window sizes.

NY International Gift Fair

I wanted to share what we've been recently working on at the studio. A small collection of sweet items that capture a nostalgia for our childhood, or perhaps the childhood of our dreams. Houses, nature, children, and pets, all play together inside a warm and worn suitcase. The art of sewing, wire bending, and paper cutting are highlighted as well as the idea of recycling and repurposing everyday items and materials. This group of goodies will be displayed in our "Bunnies By The Bay" booth at the International Gift Fair that runs from Jan. 29th- Feb. 3rd. So if you happen to be stuck in New York City due to all the snow right now, stop in at the Javits Center for a peak and let us know what you think.

This is one of the latest creations for our "hutch studio" line of little pets. "Kitty" is a soft hand painted plush sitting approx. 3 inches high. A great example of "less is more" or "less is meow". She is backed with a soft cotton fabric in a polka dot print.

"Puppy" is a hand painted plush sitting approx. 3 1/2" high. He is also backed in a soft polka dotted fabric. Both of these cuties are just prototypes at the moment along with a number of other items in the case. We want to cage a reaction at the show to see what might be worth producing more of. I know that I am looking forward to seeing more of these little pets at the studio. How about you?

A tiny collection

Krys and I are currently putting together a small collection of tiny items that will be presented at the upcoming NY gift show. The subject matter is animals, children, nature, and old book print. The materials we are using are paper, fabric, and wire. The grouping will be displayed in a beautiful old suitcase. Very "hutchy"! The picture above is the latest version of the "Bunny Girl Cabin"

I've made many of these "Sweet Little Tweets" at the studio, but this is the most recent version. The base is now made from cardboard rather than old metal lids, and the birds are made of painted "oven bake" clay rather than glazed porcelain.
I'm always asking myself "Could someone make this at home?" Sometimes changing the material or process can make a big difference. One last tweak is changing the old sheet music ling the cage to the same old book print that you see on the walls of the paper cabin.

This is a vase of flowers that is made by repurposing cardboard paper rolls. The flower children are pencils with printed faces and colored paper petals and leaves. I think that the pencils might be packaged and sold separately so you could pick which and how many flower children you want to put in your vase.

Shadows of hutch Part 1

There's something about shadows that has always excited me. Maybe it's the fact that they are all about the moment, destined to move or fade away with the light.

Since starting hutch studio, I've noticed some really amazing shadows. I think that it's result of the perfect combination of great natural light through many windows with interesting window coverings and objects within the space. In this post I want to share a few of my favorites. The first is a shadow of flowers and leaves on the floor on a sunny morning in May. It was our "Rainflowers" paper window covering creating the pattern.

This shadow was cast on the wall next to a wooden stand that had a small standing plush bird wearing a hat and carrying a treasure in it's beak. Oddly, in the afternoon of the day the picture was taken, someone purchased the bird. It's not the bird in this lonely shadow anymore.

This was a shadow that was brought to my attention by a visitor to the studio. It's a squirrel climbing down a tree branch from the hutch "winter window" pattern that hangs in the front door window. This happens during the morning hours when the sun shines.

We definitely have some great old dress forms in the shop that we use for display. This is the shadow that a wire mesh dress form that stands up against a wall in our side porch. I liked the contrast of the linear weave pattern against the organic contour of the dress form.

One sunny morning as I was beginning the hutch day, I looked down at my work table and there it was. Right under my coiled wire, shadows were cast from a small paper cut hanging in a window. Flowers standing almost as they were growing up from the table's front edge. I was tempted to grab some paint and a brush and quickly paint the shadow onto the table. Maybe that's a future hutch project "Shadow Paintings".

If you stop by the studio for a visit you may be able to view one of these shadows in person. Or maybe you can discover a totally new one. Stay tuned for more shadow pictures to come. I'm curious which one of these shadows was your favorite?

Program:

We will have a short business meeting followed by a presentation from Chris Theiss, ceramic artist and instructor at SVCC (Skagit Valley community College).

The presentation will be an overview of his ceramics and drawings from 1989 to present. He will discuss his artistic decisions, career choices, and professional ambitions.

Chris will also talk about marketing and exhibiting artwork and the future of the traditional "art show".

Bio - Chris Theiss was born in 1967 in Hope, Rhode Island. After beginning his art education at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, he transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his B.F.A. in ceramics in 1990. He then studied under Robert Arneson at U.C. Davis where he received his M.F.A. in studio art in 1992. Chris was visiting professor of ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992 and 1993. He has been a member of the art faculty at Skagit Valley College from 1993 to present. Chris has exhibited his ceramic sculpture and drawings throughout the United States and his work is in Museum collections such as The Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Los Angeles County Museum, and California Palace of the Legion of Honor. Chris’ work was recently selected for a book, “Ceramics for Beginners- hand building”,by Shay Amber.

Design Prototype!

I wanted to share the very latest in the development of the tiny paper cabins at hutch. I wanted to combine a number of visual elements that we seem to continually gravitate towards. Children and animals, old children's story books, nature, paper cutting, silhouettes, light, and our hutch colors are merged here into a tiny magical package.

Winter Wonder

~ A Blanket of Snow ~

I awoke last Sunday morning to a winter wonderland. It is a bit unusual to get much snow in the Skagit Valley. The surrounding hills and mountains are a totally different story. I set out in my 2 wheel drive, cruised at a mellow 20 miles per hour, and wound my way down the hill on which we live. After what seemed like forever I finally arrived at the studio with bells on. One of the first things I did was take some pictures of the snow flocked shop..... then I shoveled out. I was very surprised that so many people stopped in that day. Some would peer in the front window just to make sure that the open sign wasn't up by accident. It ended up being a very snowy but cozy day thanks to the warmth of friendly visitors. I hope that you enjoyed this little visual taste of what our studio looks like. For more pictures you can visit our new "tour" section located right under our blog header.

Lights of hutch

It's fair to say that the lights of hutch studio are quite unique. Look up, down, in, or out and you will notice many interesting pendants, lanterns, shades, and tea lights. Not all are for sale but some are. The porch light (pictured above)is one of the NFS examples and it is the first light you see as you enter our shop. An original fixture to the house that I would date to approximately circa 1900.

The next two lights are for sale at the shop (call for details). To the left is an inverted colander lamp and to the right a "Newman" light. I call it a "Newman" because it is made from a repurposed "Newmans Own" sauce jar. I collaged old newsprint and paper cut-outs onto the glass and then applied an amber tinted finish. They sit inside one of our hutches.

The two most dramatic fixtures in the studio are the "Red Spiral Parisol" and the large "Chinese Bird Lantern". The parisol is hand painted and the Chinese lantern has collaged bird imagery in the tinted glass panels. Don't forget to look up or you might just miss these stunning objects of illumination.

The last lights pictured are two examples of a "childlike magic". the tiny 2 1/2 inch house made with old book pages glows from the warmth of a battery operated tea light. The "Squirrel House" that hangs on the wall (pictured here without its roof), also has a battery operated light that shines on a paper cut image of a squirrel in an oak tree. I almost get more excited about the shadows that the cut out casts on the back wall, but "Shadows" are another blog post entirely.

A box ~ A tree

If you've been in the shop lately you've probably noticed the trees that are the table centerpieces in every room. They are cut and constructed using one cardboard box. Since they are paper they can be easily painted or decorated to compliment your personal style.
They are available as a "Do it yourself" kit for $24. and only for in-store pick-up. The supply is very limited. I'm going to make one right now!

Around the holidays one can easily get grinchy with all the added stresses. The crowds, the long lines, the traffic, and the expenses can turn the most jovial person into a humbug. Yesterday however I had a very heart warming surprise. A large envelope was delivered to me at hutch. It was from someone who had visited the studio recently and knew that I was looking for old children's books to repurpose. Sure enough, inside the envelope were the pages from an old children's book. I mean "old". I couldn't find an actual print date, but I'm guessing the 1920's. It was a soft back children's story/activity book with great "hutch colors" and graphics.

There is so much about these pages that inspire ideas. What truly inspires me more than the content in these fragile pages is the gesture. This person didn't have to do this but she did. It's these small acts that can make you believe in the goodness of people. Not to mention the "Greatness" of hutch studio fans. You are all the best and I meet new one's all the time. If you haven't had a chance to visit the studio in person, make a point of stopping by over the holidays. You may want to give a call first to make sure that our door will be open. #360-466-2303

A Cardboard Christmas

Cardboard has definitely been the repurposed material of choice at hutch studio, and the holidays couldn't happen for us without a cardboard tree. We have them in every room and I've painted a few with some of our wall colors. After all paper can be embellished in endless ways. My plan was to make this tree a DIY project for repurposing an old cardboard box. The response to the tree has been overwhelming and I will have a very limited supply available in the next couple of days. The shapes are drawn on a flattened box and your job is to cut out the shapes and assemble the finished tree. It measures 31 inches tall by 20 inches wide by 18 inches deep. $24.00 *They are an in-store only item because let's face it shipping a flat box in a box is a bit silly.
So pop in soon to be one of a few to have this cool creation in your home.

The art deco inspired starburst tree-topper is the most recent addition to the holiday cardboard items. It is 11"h x 8'w x 8" d and easily slips onto the tip of your tree. Now here's a topper that makes a visual and an environmental statement. Next year you could even do something different to the surface (gold leaf perhaps). Now that would be upcycled! $18.

Are you having trouble finding the perfect gift for that person who loves the environment and gadgets? Well I had to make this little number. A cardboard phone stand that allows you to set your phone up at your desk. And you can plug in the charger and still use it. I love mine. $14. Cardboard phone not included.

Sweet Art

Some of the latest and sweetest additions to hutch studio are the original watercolors of Krys Kirkpatrick. Krys has been embracing the idea of recycling and reusing by incorporating old book pages collaged onto her backgrounds and mounting her images onto corrugated cardboard. Above is "Home is where the heart is." It depicts a pig in a polka dotted dress in her flower garden with her house in the background. It measures 6"h x 6"w. The wood panel that the watercolor is mounted on is a chunky 1 3/4" deep and has brown wood grain printed over the collaged book pages. $45.

At the very top there is a piece for the winter season. It's titled "Winter Friend", and it's a snowman and bunny painted on a fabric square that is then quilted and mounted on a wood panel. 8"h x 8"w. $55.

At the very very top is a painting of a Mommy Cat and her 3 kittens in their living room entitled "Is it not a lovely day?" It measures 8"h x 8"w x 1 3/4"d.

Under The Tree

A few weeks ago I was musing about holiday trees. I wanted to make a sweet little table top decoration that utilized all these little paper coins that I cut out of an old book. I usually just scan the tables and shelves in the studio to come up with the other ingredients for the recipe. Cardboard, wire, moss, dowels, and glitter were the materials of choice that day.

After the tree was complete it still needed something else. A teeny tiny field mouse to nestle in the moss was the ticket. I made three and they were purchased within the week. I made 3 more and that will probably be it but that's what I always say. They are approximately 7" in height. $26.00

holiday ornaments

What's hanging around your tree this holiday season? If you are looking for a fun "handmade" ornament to admire by the fire check out these special items. A polka-dotted bird in green made of a soft cotton with brown felt beak and brown embroidery. It is 4 1/2" long from beak to tail feather and 2 1/2" tall. $14. each

The "Plushroom" ornament is stuffed and hand painted muslin. It measures 3 1/2" tall by 2 1/2" wide at the cap. This fun little guy "fungi" could swing on your tree till spring. $15.

The "Little Cabin" ornaments are dangling everywhere at the studio. This one was made from the pages of a 1958 "House and Garden" cookbook. So for all you foodies out there, you can get an ornament and a recipe all in one. Do you prefer fish, poultry, or deserts? It measures 4 1/2"h x 2 1/2"w. $6. each

My personal favorites are the cabins made from a 1942 Mother Goose and Peter Rabbit book. I still have a select few left. One of the very latest fun projects at the studio has been repurposing a few very old children's books. I had a "Mother Goose" and a couple "Peter Rabbit" books printed in 1942. As beautiful as these books were I had to be so careful handling them. The paper was crumbling at the edges but the majority of the images were still in good shape. They were no longer functional as books. What else could they become? I've been making many little paper cabins at hutch over the past couple of months and I thought these sweet illustrations with their rich colors could transform into fun cabins. I've made single cabins that are illuminated by a tea light $8., ornaments $6., string garlands of 5 cabins $24., and my favorite is a hanging strand mobile of 5 cabins for $24..

The individual cabins measure 4 1/2" tall x 2 1/2" wide, and because the book pages have graphics and text on both sides, the interiors are just as fun as the exteriors. They are the #1 hot item right now the stock is fairly limited, so stop on by or give me a jingle at the studio #360-466-2303. I'm excited about putting one on our tree.

Please don't cry. I know it doesn't seem like a whole month has past since the last whirligig workshop, but it has. It will be o.k. The studio is closed this Saturday (November 20th), but will be open again the very next day. 24 hours is a lot of time to be without your hutch fix but I will be there to help on Sunday.

Latest Whirlygig Workshop

The whirligig workshops are just getting better all the time. The latest group of gig-makers created some of the best to date (shown above). Truly a display worthy of topping our own hutch studio fence. I recently received an e-mail from one of the latest workshop participants saying how much she had enjoyed the day and to report that her whirligig was "spinning like crazy". Nice! I just wanted to say how great everyone was and that I was thoroughly impressed.

down to the wire

Well it is down to the wire.

I don't know about other creative people,

but I...work to the bitter end. It seems like

my best ideas are my last.

But, a little bright spot in the

blur of paper, cardboard and glue....

my lil pumpkin came by for a visit.

He is changing so much. The head is

a little more stable. And he giggles.

My daughter in law is helping with

the show...so mama and granny are

going to miss this little booboo.

Daddy-Nanny will be holding down

the fort.

If by chance any of you have been on Morris Street in La Conner, WA over the past 20 years and it just so happened to be a windy day, you undoubtedly noticed the whimsical "whirlygigs" that top the fence posts in the front of a very old Victorian house. The fence itself is a whole other story and future blog post. That house is currently the home of hutch studio (formerly the BBTB museum). Recently the art of making these fun wind catchers has been rejuvenated. Old gigs are being repaired, post caps are getting leveled and fancied, and new whirlygigs are being created. Some say that they are drawn in by the color and movement on the fence. I love that they truly reflect the hutch studio philosophy of using old or unwanted items as raw material for realizing new and fun ideas. The current buzz words for this idea are "repurposing" or "up-cycling". I just think it's smart.

Whirlygig workshops are being held at the studio and they have been fun, fun, fun! Participants bring boxes of special stuff and use it to make their own personal gigs. We have had some pretty great creations in the last 2 workshops. One student took apart an old laptop computer for his whirlygig. Pretty cool! Feel free to give us a call if you are interested in future workshops or stop in to sign up.

A little while ago our very best and special customer suggested to me that I make some whirlygigs that were small and for interior decor. As a ceramicist that leans toward miniature in my own work, I couldn't resist. The result is the "Mini Spinny". They are porcelain polychromed reproductions of the larger found object whirlygigs that live out on our fence...and did I mention, they move?

Here is what we did at Hutch,

I love the dark trim. And here

is Chris putting a wash over

the walls. Everything is layered and

has depth. Some of the walls

we painted and left a hint of the

original detail floral painting originally done.

Sanded in spots, painted, then umbered.

It is so cool! Each room is a different color, green, aqua, cream...but each

with this brown wash, so it all is cohesive. He even painted the wood floor,

which were 160 year old, very tired fir.
